Seminar on Befriending Divergent Series
Abstract: Divergent series often emerge in perturbation theory, traditionally regarded as nuisances signaling the breakdown of approximation schemes. However, modern techniques reveal that they encode far more than meets the eye. The relatively recent framework of hyperasymptotics, developed by Écalle, provides a systematic way to extract hidden, non-perturbative information from these series. Central to this approach are transseries, Borel resummation, and Alien calculus, which together offer a refined understanding of asymptotics beyond standard perturbation theory.
